Okay, technically not a latte since there’s no coffee, but don’t let the misnomer dissuade you from making this wonderful cup of cozy bliss. If you like chai lattes, I know you will absolutely love this spicy, sweet turmeric latte. Please feel free to use whatever milk you prefer. Regular, coconut, cashew, almond- any would work!
Turmeric is a fascinating Indian spice with a laundry list of health benefits. Keep in mind, when we talk about the benefits of turmeric, we are really talking about it’s most active compound, curcumin. Curcumin is known for its powerful anti inflammatory effects and antioxidant properties. It helps your body fight off foreign invaders at the molecular level while aiding cell repair. It fights free radicals by not only blocking them, but also boosts your own body’s antioxidant defenses.
There are also many studies which conclude that curcumin lowers your risk of heart disease. The level of effectiveness is comparable to prescription drugs and exercise. Additionally, curcumin prevents and treats cancer, depression, Alzheimer’s, and even arthritis.
I could go on and on, the benefits are just endless. I encourage you to do your own research on curcumin to see how it might positively affect your health.
Remember, whenever you use turmeric in a recipe be sure to add a pinch of black pepper. This allows your body to absorb much more of the curcumin. Most of the curcumin ingested metabolizes before it can be absorbed. Adding just a touch of black pepper increases the bioavailability by 2000%.
Ingredients:
1 tsp ground turmeric
1/4 tsp ground ginger (fresh ginger will also work)
1/2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/4 tsp black pepper
Milk of your choosing
Method:
Heat up your milk in whatever way is easiest for you. I simply poured the amount of milk I wanted in my mug and nuked it in the microwave until it was hot. I used almond milk but many people love coconut milk with the turmeric.
Pour milk into a blender. Add all the spices and blend until frothy, about 10 seconds will do the trick.
Return to mug, add a little sprinkle of cinnamon and pepper. Enjoy!
